Atlee Receives Honorary Doctorate, Speaks on Upcoming Film with Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone

Renowned filmmaker Atlee was conferred with an honorary doctorate by Sathyabama University in Chennai on Saturday evening, marking a significant milestone in his decade-long journey in Indian cinema. The event not only celebrated his cinematic contributions but also became a platform for the director to share insights about his career, creative process, and much-anticipated upcoming film starring Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone.

During his address on stage, Atlee reflected on the criticism that has often surrounded his work, particularly allegations of copying elements from other films. He said, “Generally, there’s a perception that the films I make are taken from here or there. But let me tell you about my life today and give an example you can connect with.”

In a heartfelt moment, Atlee spoke about Vijay’s character from Bigil (2019), a gangster-turned-football coach named Michael Rayappan, revealing a personal inspiration behind the role. “Raayappan in Bigil was inspired by Jeppiaar sir, the founder and chancellor of this university. Today, when I got the doctorate and they played music from Mersal (2017), I believe I earned this only through honesty, only through love. I promise today that I will make this country proud.”

The director also opened up about his yet-to-be-titled film with Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone, calling it one of his most ambitious projects to date. “Kalanidhi Maran sir (of Sun Pictures) is producing this film. It’s one of the most expensive films to be made in our country. We will be using a lot of new technology to make it. I’m dreaming big, and the budget has yet to be locked. The producer will decide the release date.”

The project has garnered significant buzz since its announcement. Initially revealed in April as Allu Arjun’s next venture post-Pushpa, the excitement around the film soared in June when Deepika Padukone officially joined the cast. Congratulating Atlee on his achievement, Arjun took to social media and wrote, “Big congratulations to @Atlee_dir garu on receiving the honorary doctorate. Really happy to see your passion and craft being celebrated at this level. Wishing you many more heights ahead.”

Atlee made his directorial debut with Raja Rani in 2013 and has since built a reputation for delivering consistent box office successes. His most recent film, Jawan (2023), starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, marked his Bollywood debut and went on to gross over ₹1100 crore globally, becoming Shah Rukh Khan’s highest-grossing film.

With his latest recognition and an ambitious project on the horizon, Atlee continues to solidify his position as one of the most influential directors in Indian cinema today.
