Kolkata Metro to Revolutionize Travel Between Howrah and Sealdah

Kolkata is gearing up for a groundbreaking improvement in its public transportation system. The Kolkata Metro is set to connect Howrah and Sealdah stations via the Esplanade corridor, promising to make commuting between these two major hubs faster and more seamless than ever before.
Currently, peak-hour journeys between Howrah and Sealdah are marked by heavy traffic congestion and long delays, whether one chooses buses, autos, or trains. However, the new metro connectivity will significantly reduce travel time, cutting it down to just 11 minutes. This development will prove to be a boon for college students, office-goers, and the countless daily commuters who navigate this route regularly.
"Thankfully, commuting between these places is all set to get seamless and faster than ever. Kolkata Metro is connecting Howrah and Sealdah metro stations and here’s everything you need to know about this connection," stated an official.
The project is part of the Green Line expansion and incorporates the latest Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling system, marking its debut in the Kolkata Metro network. This system will enable automated metro operations, enhancing both efficiency and safety. According to metro officials, once operational, this connection will equate to running 72 air-conditioned buses every hour, or approximately one every 50 seconds, between Howrah and Sealdah.
This ambitious project required addressing significant challenges, particularly in Bowbazar, where tunneling operations initially caused disruptions. However, metro officials have successfully resolved these issues. "A metro official stated that this link brings mental relief to locals and traders of Bowbazar," confirming the positive impact on the community.
The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) has announced a temporary suspension of services on the Green Line starting February 8, 2025, to complete construction and testing. Operations are expected to resume on March 24, 2025.
Once completed, the improved connectivity will not only save commuters significant travel time but also provide them with a comfortable, air-conditioned alternative to traditional modes of transportation. With traffic congestion on the roads often causing delays, this project is expected to offer much-needed relief to Kolkata's residents and traders alike.
The development marks a major step forward for public transport in the city, promising to transform how people commute between two of Kolkata’s busiest hubs.
