Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates India's first underwater Metro Service in Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's extensive visit to Kolkata, inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of projects worth ₹15,400 crore, underscores the government's commitment to infrastructure development. The inauguration of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro's East-West corridor marks a significant milestone in India's transportation infrastructure, particularly with the introduction of the country's first underwater Metro service. The new underwater metro in Kolkata spanning 16.6 km, with about 10.8 km running underground from Howrah Maidan to Phoolbagan, represents a significant advancement in urban transportation infrastructure. With six stations, including three underground, it promises quick and efficient travel, covering a 520 m river stretch in just 45 seconds. The use of Automatic Train Operation (ATO) ensures seamless operations, while the affordable ticket prices starting at Rs 5 for the first two km make it accessible to a wide range of commuters.
