Rajinikanth’s Coolie Maintains Strong Momentum Despite Slowdown at Box Office

Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest release, Coolie, has had an explosive start at the box office, though signs of a slowdown have begun to appear after its initial surge. “Coolie box office collection has slowed down after a stellar start, but the Rajinikanth film is still on course for a solid run.”

Industry trackers have noted that “the juggernaut that is Rajinikanth's Coolie may not be stopping, but it is finally slowing down.” Following three record-breaking days, the film witnessed its first dip in collections on Sunday. Still, by that time, Coolie had already rewritten history, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2025.

As per early estimates, the film “earned ₹158.35 crore net in India in the first three days of its release.” On Sunday, however, earnings dropped, with “Coolie had earned ₹30.84 crore, taking its total four-day domestic haul to ₹190.09 crore.” Analysts believe that “while the slowed earnings will hurt the film in the long run, it is still shaping up to have a great opening weekend.”

Globally, the film’s performance has been equally impressive. Within just three days, “internationally, too, Coolie has had a stellar run, earning over $16 million overseas in three days, and crossing ₹300 crore worldwide.” Box office experts suggest that “it now needs to avoid a big drop on Monday to have a chance at reaching the ₹500-crore and eventually ₹600-crore mark.”

In terms of competition, the film has outpaced its rival. Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2, which released on the same day, is struggling to keep up despite enjoying a wider release footprint. “Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's War 2, which released in theatres on the same day as Coolie, is lagging behind in the box office clash, despite getting more screens across India.” By the end of Sunday, “while Coolie has already crossed ₹190 crore, and will reach the ₹200 crore mark soon, War 2 is lagging behind with ₹170 crore net in India. In addition, its overseas collection ($5 million) is much lower than Coolie's $16 million.”

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie features Rajinikanth in the titular role, supported by a star-studded cast including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj, with a cameo appearance by Aamir Khan. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, “Coolie has been appreciated by fans,” underlining Rajinikanth’s unmatched box office pull.
