Sonu Nigam Issues Public Apology Amid Backlash Over Bengaluru Concert Remarks

Renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam has issued a formal apology following widespread criticism for his comments made during a recent concert in Bengaluru. The controversy, which erupted after the April 25 event at East Point College, has led to both public outcry and legal action, including an FIR filed against the artist.

The singer initially addressed the situation with a clarification on Instagram, but later returned to the platform with a heartfelt apology. “Sorry Karnataka. My love for you is bigger than my ego. Love you always,” Nigam wrote, expressing regret and reaffirming his affection for the state.

In his earlier clarification, Nigam emphasized his deep respect for Karnataka’s language, culture, and music. He pointed out his long-standing association with Kannada music, stating that he often performs Kannada songs for over an hour during his shows in the region. He also explained the circumstances that led to the misunderstanding during the concert, claiming that he felt humiliated by a fan and was threatened by a young individual during the performance.

“I am not a young lad to take humiliation from anyone. I am 51 years old, in the second half of my life and am entitled to take offence for someone as young as my son threatening me directly in front of thousands in the name of a language that too Kannada, which is my second language when it comes to my work. That, too, right after my first song of the concert!” he shared on Instagram.

Referring to the fallout, Nigam added, “I leave it up to the sensible people of Karnataka to decide who is at fault here. I will accept your verdict gracefully. I fully respect and trust the law agencies and Police of Karnataka and will comply with whatever is expected from me. I have received divine love from Karnataka and will cherish it always with no malice whatsoever, irrespective of your verdict.”

The controversy escalated after reports emerged that Nigam had declined a fan’s request to sing a Kannada song and, in the same breath, referred to the Pahalgam terror attack. His response drew sharp criticism and led to an FIR being filed on May 3 for allegedly making offensive comments towards the Kannadiga community. The Bengaluru District Police have since issued a notice requesting the singer’s appearance before the investigating officer within a week.

Amid the backlash, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) announced that the Kannada film industry, popularly known as Sandalwood, will suspend all collaborations with Sonu Nigam for future projects.

As the situation continues to unfold, fans and industry observers await further developments, with many hoping for a peaceful resolution.
