SS Rajamouli Becomes India’s Highest-Paid Filmmaker, Surpassing Even Top Superstars
In an industry often dominated by star power, where actors are the primary faces of films and spearhead promotional campaigns, it's rare for directors to command equal—let alone higher—remuneration. However, one filmmaker has redefined that narrative, becoming a bigger draw than even the most celebrated Bollywood stars.
"India's highest-paid filmmaker charges even more than Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan for one film." While actors typically lead the charge in terms of popularity and crowd-pulling power, a few directors in the Indian film industry have built an equally commanding influence. Among them, Telugu filmmaker SS Rajamouli stands tall.
"Telugu filmmaker SS Rajamouli is India's highest-paid film director right now. According to IMDb, the director charges around ₹200 crore for every film he directs." Industry sources reveal that this figure includes his base fee, a share of the profits, and bonuses from the sale of film rights. "The more a film earns, the higher his share can go. For RRR, it was around ₹200 crore."
This staggering fee has made Rajamouli one of the most expensive talents in Indian cinema—more than what even top-billed actors receive. "Even superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan take home something from ₹150-180 crore per film, a lower sum than what Rajamouli earns."
So, what justifies this premium? "The high pay reflects the filmmaker's superstar status among filmmakers." With the massive success of the Baahubali series, Rajamouli became a household name across the country. His name alone is now enough to sell a film, regardless of the actors involved. "RRR was marketed in the north as Rajamouli's film despite the presence of two big stars - Ram Charan and Jr NTR."
This pan-India appeal stems from record-breaking box office performances. "Baahubali 2 earned ₹510 crore in Hindi alone, and remained the highest-grossing film in Hindi for six years till it was surpassed by Pathaan in 2023." Similarly, "RRR also earned over ₹270 crore in Hindi."
In comparison, other top directors in India still trail behind Rajamouli by a significant margin. "According to industry sources, no other director charges even half of what Rajamouli does, with big names like Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Prasanth Neel charging around ₹90 crore per film." Meanwhile, "Rajkumar Hirani takes home ₹80 crore, while Sukumar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Siddharth Anand bring up the rear, with each charging in excess of ₹40 crore per film."
As for well-known producer-directors like Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty, their business model differs. "Makers like Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty usually produce their own films, which is why they forego fees and only take in profits."
With each blockbuster, SS Rajamouli not only reaffirms his creative genius but also strengthens his position as a powerhouse brand in Indian cinema—one whose name alone guarantees mass anticipation and box office gold.
