Aamir Khan Admits He Didn't Like Thugs of Hindostan, Ahead of Sitaare Zameen Par Release

As Aamir Khan readies himself for his next cinematic outing Sitaare Zameen Par, the actor has opened up about one of the most talked-about low points in his career—Thugs of Hindostan. The 2018 film, despite boasting a stellar cast including Aamir himself, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, and Dangal breakout Fatima Sana Shaikh, turned out to be a major box office disappointment.

During a recent interview with Zee Music Company’s YouTube channel, Aamir candidly admitted that he never truly liked the film. “What happened with Thugs was… I didn’t like the film myself. Now, enough years have passed and I really respect Adi (Aditya) and Victor (Vijay) but sometimes, there are creative differences. When the film was made, Adi and Victor really liked it, the way it was made, but I didn’t like it at all. I felt that structurally, we went wrong with the writing and I tried to tell them about it but they were confident that the film is good,” the actor shared.

Back in 2018, Thugs of Hindostan was one of the most anticipated releases, but its underwhelming screenplay and execution led to negative reviews and widespread disappointment. Aamir had publicly apologized to fans soon after the release. Now, years later, he has shed light on what went on behind the scenes.

The actor revealed that he tried to convey his concerns to the filmmakers for months. “I tried to tell them about it but they were confident that the film is good,” he said, adding, “I said I have no anxiety about this film because I know this won’t work and I believe if I don’t like it, why should I expect the audience to like it? So when Thugs didn’t work, I didn’t feel bad because I didn’t like it too.”

Aamir also shared a moment with his then-wife Kiran Rao, expressing his lack of anxiety ahead of the release, fully aware that the film might not resonate with audiences.

With Sitaare Zameen Par—which also stars Genelia Deshmukh—Aamir Khan is aiming for a fresh start, and his honesty about past missteps reflects a mature, introspective side of the superstar rarely seen in public.
