Kajol Reveals Her Kids Prefer Her in Comedy Roles, Not Horror: “They Can’t Watch Me Cry”

Veteran Bollywood actor Kajol, known for her versatility across genres, is all set to explore horror for the first time in her upcoming film Maa, directed by Vishal Furia. A spinoff of Ajay Devgn’s 2024 supernatural thriller Shaitaan, the film also features Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherin Sharma in key roles.

While Kajol is excited to dive into new territory, her children—daughter Nysa and son Yug—have a very different opinion about the kinds of roles they want to see her in. Speaking to The Hindustan Times, Kajol shared, “They are very clear about it: ‘We can’t watch you crying on screen; you should do films like papa does. Do Golmaal!’ They want me to do films that only make them laugh, and there is nobody crying, no glycerine is used, and nothing happens to me. I wonder what is this film where nothing happens to me, and I have to do nothing. Why am I in this film?”

Having become more selective about her work in recent years, Kajol took on the role of a cop for the first time in her previous film, the mystery thriller Do Patti. Now, with Maa, she’s stepping further out of her comfort zone. However, she admits that not everyone around her is comfortable with this new shift.

“I wasn’t that unsettled by it, probably because I did it. But everyone around me had the same reaction (makes disgusted face). They said, ‘I can’t see you like this’. But that’s what horror is, and that’s why it will be particularly effective,” she said.

The actor also revealed that her daughter Nysa may not even watch Maa, given her dislike for horror. “She is like me, doesn’t like horror,” Kajol admitted.

Despite the reactions from family and friends, Kajol said she was drawn to the project because of its mythological undertones. “Our country has such wonderful and fabulous stories and one of my favourites is Maa Kali and Raktabeej’s story,” she shared, adding that being a “mythology buff” made Maa an instant yes for her.

As Kajol continues to challenge herself with unconventional roles, her fans—and her kids—wait to see which genre she will conquer next.
