Anurag Kashyap Confirms Relocation to South India, Calls Hindi Film Industry "Toxic"

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has confirmed his decision to leave Mumbai and relocate to South India, citing dissatisfaction with the current state of the Hindi film industry. In a recent conversation with The Hindu, Kashyap described Bollywood as "toxic," expressing concerns over its creative decline.

Bollywood's Changing Landscape

According to reports, Kashyap has likely moved to Bangalore. The director, known for his unconventional storytelling, has been vocal about his frustration with the industry's increasing focus on commercial success over artistic expression.

"I want to stay away from film people. The industry has become too toxic. Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next ₹500 or ₹800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone," he stated.

Kashyap had previously shared similar sentiments in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, where he revealed feeling "disgusted" and "disappointed" with the Hindi film industry. He expressed admiration for filmmakers in South India, whom he believes have a more "stimulative" environment for creativity.

"I envy them (South filmmakers). Because now, it's difficult for me to go out and experiment. Because now, it comes at a cost, which makes my producers think about profit. They're like, ‘Where are my margins? I’m losing money.’ I'm like, ‘You don’t want to make this movie? Don’t make this movie.’ But I just cannot. Because right from the beginning, before the film starts, it becomes about ‘how do we sell it?’ So the joy of filmmaking is sucked out. That's why I want to move out. Literally, next year, I'm moving out of Mumbai," he explained.

Upcoming Projects

Despite his move, Kashyap remains actively involved in the industry. He is currently promoting Footage, a Malayalam film directed by Saiju Sreedharan, which he has presented. Starring Manju Warrier, Vishak Nair, and Gayathri Ashok, the film was originally released in August last year, with its Hindi version set to premiere on March 7, 2025.

Kashyap is also stepping in front of the camera for Dacoit, in which he plays a fearless cop. The film, shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, features Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles. The release date for Dacoit is yet to be announced.

While Kashyap’s departure from Mumbai marks a significant shift in his career, his passion for storytelling remains undeterred. His move to South India signals a new chapter, one where creative freedom takes precedence over commercial pressures.
