Ariana Grande Opens Up About Navigating Criticism and Prioritizing Mental Health

Ariana Grande recently reflected on how she navigates public criticism, emphasizing personal growth, self-care, and the importance of a supportive network. In an emotional interview conducted by French content creator Crazy Sally, Grande sat alongside her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo to discuss the pressures of fame and societal expectations.

“I’ve been doing this in front of the public and been a specimen in a Petri dish really since I was 16 or 17,” the 31-year-old singer and actress shared, pausing to compose herself. “I have heard it all. I’ve heard every version of it. You’re young and you’re hearing all kinds of things.”

Grande likened her experiences to everyday scenarios where people face unsolicited opinions. “It’s something that is uncomfortable no matter what scale you’re experiencing it on, even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner and someone’s granny says, ‘Oh my god, you look skinnier, what happened?’ or ‘You look heavier, what happened?’”

The Swindle star criticized society's tendency to comment on others’ appearances, describing it as “dangerous for all parties involved.” She highlighted the importance of self-acceptance and resilience. “I’m really lucky to have the support system that I have and to just know and trust that I’m beautiful. But I do know what the pressure of that noise feels like,” she said.

Grande revealed how she has learned to block out negativity. “It’s been a resident in my life since I was 17. I just don’t invite it in anymore. I have work to do, I have a life to live, I have friends to love on. I have so much love. It’s not invited, so I don’t leave space for it anymore.”

Encouraging others to prioritize their mental well-being, she added, “You keep yourself safe because no one has the right to say s**t.”

Cynthia Erivo praised Grande’s vulnerability, noting her pride in Grande’s openness. Erivo also shared her own journey, describing her experiences as an “alternative and different” Black woman in the entertainment industry.

This candid conversation follows a previous moment in April 2023 when Grande posted a heartfelt TikTok video addressing public comments about her appearance. She revealed how perceptions of her “healthiest” body were tied to a period of personal struggle.

“There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful. And personally, for me, the body that you've been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body,” Grande explained in the video.

Through her words and actions, Grande continues to advocate for self-love and the rejection of societal pressures, inspiring fans to prioritize their mental health and well-being above all else.
