Divyenndu Highlights the Impact of OTT on His Acting Journey and the Industry
Amid ongoing discussions about how global content on streaming platforms has influenced audience preferences and impacted theatre attendance, actor Divyenndu, best known for his roles in web shows like Mirzapur, Salt City, and The Railway Men, has shared his thoughts on the transformative role of OTT platforms in his career.
Divyenndu, who was last seen in the web series Life Hill Gayi, emphasized that the kind of work he engages in is more significant to him than the medium through which it is delivered. Reflecting on his journey, the 41-year-old actor noted that OTT has not only provided him with a platform to showcase his talent but has also “satiated” his artistic hunger in a way that traditional theatrical films had not.
"I was getting work left, right, and center in theatrical films and was content with that," Divyenndu shared. "But when OTT came, it became food for my soul. It unleashed a different kind of energy within me."
He further explained that OTT opened new doors for him, allowing him to explore a diverse range of characters. "I wanted to do different roles and showcase what I could do when given the opportunity. OTT gave me that platform."
When asked if his acting journey would have been more challenging without the opportunities provided by OTT, Divyenndu responded that his focus has always been on the type of work he does, rather than the medium. "It doesn’t matter how ‘successful’ you are in films. What gives me happiness is the kind of work I want to do, the people I want to collaborate with, and whether or not I want to do a project."
He also pointed out that traditional films can sometimes be restrictive, with many do’s and don’ts. In contrast, OTT platforms offer greater freedom. "Films can make one feel boxed in, but OTT has many advantages. Otherwise, a boy like me—happy-go-lucky—nobody could have imagined me playing a character like Munna," he added, referring to his popular role in Mirzapur.
Divyenndu praised OTT for creating a level playing field for actors, noting that performances on these platforms are not judged by box office numbers or first weekend collections. "OTT has made the whole game merit-based. The competition is no longer limited to local talent; we’re now competing on a global scale, even with shows like Game of Thrones."
He concluded by underscoring the necessity of OTT for the growth of cinema in India. "OTT is essential. It has shown us—artistes, directors, and aspiring talent—that art doesn’t need to be confined to numbers. It has allowed cinema in this country to grow significantly."
