Harshvardhan Rane Prepares for 'Sanam Teri Kasam' Sequel Amidst Rights Controversy

The 2016 romantic drama Sanam Teri Kasam has found renewed appreciation following its recent re-release. Directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, the film initially underperformed at the box office but has since gained a strong fan following. As excitement builds over the possibility of a sequel, a controversy has emerged regarding the rights to the film.

Producer Asserts Rights Over Sequel

Recently, producer Deepak Mukut addressed the reports surrounding the sequel, clarifying that he holds the intellectual property (IP) rights to the film. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, he stated, “The IP of Sanam Teri Kasam belongs to me since I am its producer. So, the rights to make a sequel or even a prequel or a remake rests with me. In fact, I announced the sequel in September 2024 with Harshvardhan Rane in the lead.”

Mukut further noted that he has not yet finalized a director for the project and has had no discussions with Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru regarding their involvement. “As for the directors, I haven’t had any discussion with them. They haven’t met and spoken to me about it. I have not finalized any director,” he added.

When asked whether he plans to reach out to the directors, he responded, “It is their duty to reach out to me rather than the other way round, especially since they are giving interviews about making the sequel. I just want to reiterate that the rights belong to me.” Mukut confirmed that the writing process for the sequel is currently underway and that production will commence once the script is finalized.

Harshvardhan Rane’s Commitment to the Role

Actor Harshvardhan Rane, who played the male lead in the original film, has also been making headlines with his intense preparation for the sequel. He recently revealed that he would consume only water for 11 days as part of his commitment to the role.

Box Office Performance and Revival

Sanam Teri Kasam was released in 2016 with a budget of ₹14 crore but struggled to find commercial success, earning only ₹9.1 crore at the box office. Despite its initial underperformance, the film gained a cult following over the years. Its re-release on February 7, 2025, has seen remarkable success, outperforming its original run.

According to Sacnilk, the film has recorded the highest weekend collection for a Bollywood re-release, grossing ₹3-3.25 crore on Monday and bringing its total earnings to ₹18.50 crore. This figure is more than double its original lifetime domestic earnings, signaling a resurgence in audience interest.

As the sequel moves forward, fans eagerly await further developments regarding its cast, direction, and production timeline.
