Mithun Chakraborty to Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema
Veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty has been named the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor accorded by the Indian government for contributions to cinema. Chakraborty, a three-time National Award winner, has had a prolific career spanning over 350 films across multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Odia, Telugu, and Tamil.
Known for his dynamic screen presence, impressive acting, and dance prowess, Mithun Chakraborty was a superstar in Indian cinema during the 1980s and 1990s. Over time, he smoothly transitioned into supporting roles while maintaining his stature in the industry. Some of his notable films include the iconic Disco Dancer, Mrigayaa, Gudia, Guru, and Oh My God.
Chakraborty's breakthrough came with the 1982 film Disco Dancer, where he captivated audiences with his energetic dancing skills. Prior to that, he had already established his acting credentials with critically acclaimed films like Mrinal Sen's Mrigayaa (1976), which earned him his first National Award, Surakshaa (1979), Kasturi (1980), and The Naxalites, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. In his career, he secured two additional National Awards for his performances in Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1996), proving his versatility and range as an actor.
Though celebrated for his dance numbers, Chakraborty demonstrated remarkable adaptability in multiple genres, including action and comedy. His international appeal was further solidified through the global success of Disco Dancer, particularly in countries like Russia and Kazakhstan. In addition to his cinema career, Mithun Chakraborty has had a successful run in television, hosting popular shows like Grandmaster, Bigg Boss Bangla, Dadagiri, and Dance India Dance.
Aside from his entertainment career, Mithun Chakraborty has also been active in politics. Previously a member of the Trinamool Congress, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from 2014 to 2016. Currently, he is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Known as the “common man’s hero,” Chakraborty’s rise from modest beginnings as Gouranga Chakraborty in 1950, in Calcutta, to becoming one of the most celebrated actors in India, has inspired countless fans. His journey is a testament to his resilience and talent, making him a beloved figure in Indian cinema.
This year's Dadasaheb Phalke Award announcement was made by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who stated, “Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.” The award will be presented at the 70th National Awards ceremony on October 8, where Chakraborty will be honored alongside other winners.
