Ranbir Kapoor Opts for Ramayana Over Kishore Kumar Biopic, Confirms Anurag Basu

Ranbir Kapoor is all set to portray Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated two-part epic Ramayana, slated for release on Diwali 2026 and Diwali 2027. However, his commitment to the mythological saga has come at the cost of another much-awaited project — the biopic on legendary singer Kishore Kumar, which has been in the works for over a decade.

Filmmaker Anurag Basu, who was set to direct the Kishore Kumar biopic, revealed in a recent interview with BBC News that Ranbir had to make a tough call between the two projects. "Ranbir had a tough choice in life — Kishore Kumar or Ramayana. It was very difficult for him. In the end, he chose Ramayana, and I think it was the right decision," Basu shared.

Kapoor and Basu share a creative rapport, having previously collaborated on acclaimed films like Barfi! (2012) and Jagga Jasoos (2017). Despite their mutual desire to work together again, aligning their schedules has proven challenging. "We keep trying to work together, but it’s just not happening," the director added.

With Ranbir stepping away, fresh reports suggest that Aamir Khan may be in talks to take on the role of Kishore Kumar. While discussions are ongoing, Basu remains cautious. “Until everything is finalised and the contract is signed, I don’t think I should speak on it. This project has seen many ups and downs over the years. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it happens this time and I go on set with the story, which I’ve been trying to tell for the last decade. I won’t jinx it by speaking about it,” he said in an interview with Mid-Day.

Meanwhile, Anurag Basu’s latest directorial venture, Metro... In Dino, premiered in theatres on July 4 and was met with favourable reviews, particularly for its ensemble cast and layered narrative. His next film — reportedly Aashiqui 3, featuring Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela — was initially planned for a Diwali 2025 release, but industry sources now suggest it may arrive in early 2026.

As for Ranbir Kapoor, his role in Ramayana marks a major milestone in his career, positioning him at the heart of one of the most ambitious cinematic projects in Indian film history.
