Tumbbad Breaks Records on Re-release; Sohum Shah Announces 'Tumbbad 2'
The critically acclaimed film Tumbbad, originally released in 2018, has broken its own box office records following its re-release in theatres after six years. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, the film has not only surpassed its original run but also outperformed legendary Bollywood classics like Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam, and Rockstar in terms of opening-day collections.
Sohum Shah, who starred in and produced the film, made the official announcement of Tumbbad 2 through a video teaser on his Instagram account. The teaser features characters Vinayak, played by Shah, and his son Pandurang, with an eerie voiceover from the actor, stating, "Samay ka pahiya gol hai, jo beet gaya woh fir laut ke aayega...darwaaza bhi ek baar phir khulega (Time moves in circles. What happened in the past will return again… The door will reopen)." The teaser closes with the ominous phrase, "Pralay, Pralay phir aayega," hinting at a larger and darker sequel.
In an official statement released by his PR team, Shah shared his enthusiasm for the sequel, saying, "Tumbbad has been a special journey and a labour of love for us, and to see the love it continues to receive is overwhelming and only ratifies our belief and ethos of Sohum Shah Films, that content is king." He further added, "With Tumbbad 2, we want to push the cinematic experience and boundaries even further. Tumbbad 2 will take audiences deeper into the world we've created, with bigger twists and a more intense exploration of what happens when greed knows no limits."
The original Tumbbad is set against the backdrop of rural Maharashtra and follows the story of Vinayak Rao, played by Sohum Shah, as he embarks on a perilous journey in search of a mythical treasure. The narrative explores themes of greed, ambition, and the supernatural, with the malevolent entity Hastar serving as a key antagonist. The film was directed by Rahi Anil Barve, with Anand Gandhi as the creative director and Adesh Prasad as the co-director. The screenplay was written by Mitesh Shah, Adesh Prasad, Barve, and Gandhi. It was produced by Sohum Shah, Aanand L Rai, Mukesh Shah, and Amita Shah.
With Tumbbad 2, the creators are aiming to expand the mythos introduced in the first film, offering a more immersive and intense experience for audiences. Fans of the original can expect more twists and an even deeper dive into the dark and mysterious world that captivated viewers in the first installment.
Tumbbad returned to theatres on September 13, 2024, setting the stage for its highly anticipated sequel.
