Veteran Actor Achyut Potdar Passes Away at 91 in Thane
Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, best remembered for his role as a professor in Rajkumar Hirani’s cult classic 3 Idiots, passed away on Monday in Thane at the age of 91.
"The exact cause of his death has not been revealed." However, according to reports, Potdar had been admitted to a hospital in Thane recently due to age-related complications.
The news was confirmed on social media by the official Instagram handle of Star Pravah, which shared a condolence note: “A heartfelt tribute to senior actor Achyut Potdar… His smile, simplicity and honesty in every role will always be remembered.”
Potdar, who joined the entertainment industry at the age of 44, went on to have a prolific career spanning over four decades. He featured in more than 125 Hindi and Marathi films along with over 100 television serials. His memorable line “Kehna Kya Chahte Ho” from 3 Idiots went viral and continues to be referenced in popular culture.
Before entering films, Potdar had a distinguished professional journey. After completing his graduation, he worked as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, later joining the Indian Army, and eventually serving with the Indian Oil Company. It was only after these chapters in his life that he pursued his passion for acting.
On the big screen, Potdar delivered notable performances in films such as Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Dilwale, Rangeela, Mrityudand, Vaastav, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2 and Ventilator.
His television appearances were equally impactful, with popular roles in Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, Mrs Tendulkar, and Bharat Ki Khoj. Widely respected for his versatility, he worked extensively in both Hindi and Marathi industries, leaving behind a rich legacy of work.
