Janhvi Kapoor’s Film Homebound Receives 9-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes
Actress Janhvi Kapoor marked her debut at the prestigious 78th Cannes Film Festival with the premiere of Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. The film, which also stars Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, received a resounding 9-minute standing ovation from the audience, earning praise for its storytelling and performances.
As part of the Get Ready With Me segment by Vogue India, Janhvi reflected on her emotional return to Cannes, a place that holds deep personal significance for her. She shared heartfelt memories of her late mother, legendary actress Sridevi, recalling their family holidays and moments of celebration in the French Riviera.
“You know this place was my mom's favourite place to come to for a holiday. We spent 3-4 consecutive summers here... It was like a big thing with us as a family. Every time mom would do something, every time she was getting an award, or her movie (was getting screened somewhere)... I remember English Vinglish premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, or when dad was shooting somewhere... All of these big life moments. We would be together as a family and experience them together and celebrate,” she said.
Janhvi further expressed the sense of void she felt at Cannes without her mother. “We are back in Cannes. My dad (Boney Kapoor) and Khushi are with me... It is weird coming back here without her and especially because she always took me to her big moments. I miss her a lot,” she added.
Making a strong style statement on the red carpet, Janhvi paid tribute to Sridevi through her fashion choices. For her initial appearance, she wore a rose-pink ensemble by designer Tarun Tahiliani, complemented by elegant pearl jewellery. For the premiere of Homebound, she turned heads in a custom creation by Anamika Khanna — a gown that fused Indian heritage with contemporary couture. A standout feature of the look was her bare back, adorned with a striking statement necklace worn in reverse.
Joining Janhvi at the screening were director Neeraj Ghaywan and producer Karan Johar, along with co-stars Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa. The team received an overwhelming response from the international audience, as Homebound cemented its place as one of the highlights of the festival.
The emotional resonance of the evening, combined with Janhvi’s poised presence and the film’s acclaim, made for a memorable Cannes debut for the actress.
