Karan Johar Addresses Backlash Against Nadaaniyan, Calls for Sensitivity in Criticism
Filmmaker Karan Johar has responded to the criticism surrounding his latest production, Nadaaniyan, which premiered on Netflix on March 7. Starring newcomers Khushi Kapoor and Ibrahim Ali Khan, the film quickly became the subject of online discussions, memes, and mixed reviews.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai for his Punjabi film Akaal, Johar acknowledged the scrutiny but took a firm stance against personal attacks directed at the young actors. When asked about the backlash, he quoted a classic Bollywood song, saying, “Kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna…” He emphasized that while criticism is natural, personal and harsh remarks cross a line.
“Those who know me understand that my relationship with critics doesn’t change based on their reviews. If you liked or disliked the film, that is your perspective. I have always believed that there’s no grand conspiracy to pull a film down, though trolls will do that. But these are frustrated, faceless people behind screens. I pity them,” Johar stated.
Expressing concern over the extent of negativity, the filmmaker pointed out a particularly aggressive review that stated, ‘I want to kick this film.’ Calling such comments excessive, he remarked, “When you write things like this, I have a problem with it. Criticism is fine, but attacking someone personally? That’s unacceptable.”
Johar admitted that Nadaaniyan, like some of his past projects, might not have met expectations. Referencing his previous films, he said, “Humaari bhi nadaaniya hai, gustaakhiya hai, toh kabhi gehraiyaan hai.” However, he stressed that personal attacks reflect more on the critic than on the film itself.
Drawing a parallel between words and violence, he stated, “Words can be as violent as actions. You are not allowed to be physically violent in the real world—verbal violence should also be condemned.” He urged critics to exercise compassion, especially when reviewing performances by young actors at the beginning of their careers.
Despite the polarized reactions, Nadaaniyan continues to be a topic of discussion, highlighting the evolving landscape of audience engagement with digital content.
