Sara Ali Khan on Her Relatable Persona and Upbringing: "I Am Just Who I Am"
Sara Ali Khan has always garnered attention since her debut in 2018 with Kedarnath. Known for her candid shayari and relatable off-screen fashion choices, she often sparks debate among her fans and critics alike. While many appreciate her approachable style, often seen in non-designer wear, some speculate that her image is a carefully crafted product of public relations. Given her lineage—being the daughter of actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh—this perception has persisted over the years.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Sara addressed the ongoing speculation about her public persona, clarifying that there is nothing curated about her off-screen image. When asked if her relatability was a "conscious decision," she stated, "I don’t think I’ve spent any energy, to the dismay of some people, curating an image of myself. That’s something I would do for the camera, where I curate characters. In real life, I am just who I am — whether that’s somebody who goes to the gym with five pairs of shorts and alternates them with crop tops, or someone who goes to the airport in athleisure but can also go in jeans and a t-shirt."
Sara further reflected on her upbringing with her brother, Ibrahim Ali Khan, noting that their childhood was different from what people might expect. Raised by their mother, Amrita Singh, following her divorce from Saif Ali Khan, Sara described their childhood as relatively normal. “We went to the mall to play video games or eat at the food court. That’s the life I was used to, growing up. Today, I appreciate my job. But when I’m not working—going to the gym, cafe, travelling, I just try not to take my persona very seriously and do what I feel like,” she added.
Despite her family's high-profile status, Sara's remarks underscore her effort to maintain authenticity in her personal life, separate from the roles she takes on in front of the camera.
In terms of her career, Sara was recently seen in the Netflix film Murder Mubarak, where she played Bambi, and in Prime Video’s Ae Watan Mere Watan, portraying Usha Mehta. Currently, she is filming for three projects: Metro... In Dino, Sky Force, and Eagle.
