Shahid Kapoor’s Ashwatthama Put on Hold Due to Budget Constraints
Shahid Kapoor's much-anticipated mythological film, Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues, has faced a significant setback as production has been put on hold. The film, produced by Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment in collaboration with Amazon Studios, had an estimated budget of over ₹500 crore and was set to be one of Amazon Prime Video’s most ambitious Indian projects.
Directed by Kannada filmmaker Sachin B Ravi, the project aimed to bring the legendary tale of Ashwatthama from the Mahabharata to life in a modern-day narrative. However, according to a report in Mid-Day, escalating budget constraints and logistical challenges have stalled the ambitious venture.
An insider from the production team shared, “The project’s scale was enormous. The idea was to create something that could rival international fantasy-action films. Ashwatthama was supposed to be shot across multiple countries. But as we began working out the logistics and coordinating shoots across international locations, it became clear that staying within budget would be a serious challenge. Pooja Entertainment’s debt became another big factor.”
Shahid Kapoor, who was set to play the titular role, had already begun physical training for the film. The narrative was designed to weave mythological themes with a contemporary setting, showcasing Ashwatthama as a legendary warrior reimagined for the present day.
Reflecting on the risks associated with such large-scale productions, the source further added, “Given the current state of the market, studios are being cautious about green-lighting mega-budget films. A project like Ashwatthama comes with a lot of risk.”
On the professional front, Shahid Kapoor was last seen in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, which co-starred Kriti Sanon and Dimple Kapadia. His next film, Deva, directed by Rosshan Andrrews, is slated for release on February 14 next year. Featuring Pooja Hegde and Kubbra Sait, Deva revolves around a brilliant yet rebellious police officer investigating a high-profile case. As the story unfolds, the protagonist uncovers a web of deceit and betrayal, leading to a thrilling and dangerous journey.
While Ashwatthama remains in limbo, fans of Shahid Kapoor eagerly await his upcoming projects, holding out hope for the revival of this grand mythological saga.
