Tribute to Late Actor Lee Sun Kyun at 29th Busan International Film Festival
The 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) opened on October 2 with a solemn tribute to the late actor Lee Sun Kyun, known for his acclaimed role in the Oscar-winning film Parasite. The event, held at the Busan Cinema Theatre in the Haeundae-gu District, featured a memoriam video that captivated the audience and left many, including prominent K-drama stars like Song Joong Ki and Ha Yoon Kyung, visibly emotional.
Lee Sun Kyun, who tragically passed away in December 2023 at the age of 48 in an apparent suicide amid a drug investigation, was honored with a posthumous Korean Cinema Award during the ceremony. The tribute included a montage showcasing his diverse body of work and heartfelt messages that underscored his passion for the arts.
"It was truly a poignant goodbye," remarked Park Bo Young, who concluded the tribute. "Just as in the final words of My Mister, we sincerely hope he has found the peace he sought,” she added, echoing the sentiments of many in attendance. Ahn Jae Hong, co-host of the event, announced that the festival would also feature screenings of some of Lee's notable films, including Parasite and episodes from My Mister.
In the weeks leading up to the festival, officials had revealed a special program, “in Memory of Lee Sun Kyun,” dedicated to showcasing the works of the globally recognized actor. The event not only served as a celebration of Lee's contributions to Korean cinema but also as a reminder of the challenges faced by those in the entertainment industry.
