Veteran Bengali actor and celebrated theatre personality Manoj Mitra passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 85 in a Kolkata hospital. Known for his powerful performances and significant contributions to Indian cinema and theatre, Mitra had been admitted to the hospital in Salt Lake due to breathing difficulties and other age-related health issues. His demise occurred around 8:50 a.m.

Mitra, widely regarded for his role in Tapan Sinha’s Banchharamer Bagan and appearances in Satyajit Ray’s acclaimed films Ghare Baire and Ganashatru, held a special place in Bengali cinema. He also collaborated with prominent directors, including Basu Chatterjee, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, and Tarun Majumdar, further establishing his legacy.

In addition to his film career, Mitra was a prolific playwright, penning over 100 plays throughout his life. His contributions to Indian theatre were recognized with numerous awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Best Playwright in 1985.
