"Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" Re-Release Sparks New Year Cheer, Earns ₹1.20 Crore on Opening Day

Ayan Mukerji's 2013 romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles, returned to cinemas on Friday, bringing a wave of nostalgia and New Year's cheer for audiences. The re-release collected ₹1.20 crore on its opening day, according to Sacnilk. The film sold 65,000 tickets, boosting its domestic gross to ₹188.57 crore and worldwide earnings to ₹318 crore.

With this impressive performance, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani secured the second-best opening for a re-released film, trailing only behind Rahi Anil Bharve's 2018 folk horror Tumbbad, which earned ₹1.50 crore on its re-release opening day. It has surpassed the re-release numbers of other classics, such as Sajid Ali's Laila Majnu (₹30 lakh), Rakesh Roshan's Karan Arjun (₹25 lakh), Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara (₹20 lakh), and Nikkhil Advani's Kal Ho Naa Ho (₹12 lakh).

Producer Karan Johar shared the audience's enthusiasm through his Instagram Story, posting a video of moviegoers dancing to the popular track Badtameez Dil inside theatres. He captioned it, "Converting cinemas into rock concerts! YJHD is back in theatres!"

The film, fondly remembered for its blend of friendship, love, travel, music, and adventure, stars Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur, the late Farooq Shaikh, Tanvi Azmi, Kunaal Roy Kapur, and Rana Daggubati in pivotal roles. With a chart-topping soundtrack composed by Pritam, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani became a cultural phenomenon upon its release.

The film also marked Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone's first collaboration after their breakup, a reunion that fans cherished. They later reunited for Imtiaz Ali's 2015 romantic drama Tamasha. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was Ayan Mukerji's second collaboration with Ranbir Kapoor, following Wake Up Sid (2009), and preceded their 2022 blockbuster Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva.

The re-release has once again cemented the film's status as a cult classic, delighting both loyal fans and new audiences alike.
