Zakir Hussain: Family Refutes Death Rumors, Seeks Prayers for Recovery

Reports of tabla maestro Zakir Hussain’s death swept across social media on Sunday night, sparking an outpouring of condolences from politicians, celebrities, and fans worldwide. However, the claims were swiftly debunked by his nephew, Ameer Aulia, who urged the public to stop spreading misinformation.

“My uncle Zakir Hussain is very much alive,” Aulia clarified on an unverified X account. “We ask the news media to stop posting false information. He is in a serious condition, and we urge his fans around the world to pray for his recovery.”

The 73-year-old tabla virtuoso is currently admitted to the intensive care unit of a San Francisco hospital, battling heart-related complications. Hussain’s manager, Nirmala Bachani, revealed that the musician had been dealing with blood pressure issues. “We ask for everyone’s well-wishes and prayers during this challenging time,” she said.

Adding to the clarification, journalist Parvaiz Alam stated that no official confirmation of Hussain’s death had been issued by his family. “I checked with his brother-in-law in London at 1640 GMT on 15 December. The family has not confirmed the news of his death,” Alam shared on X.

Despite these statements, social media platforms continued to see tributes pouring in, including posts from prominent figures like Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also joined in, tweeting, “The world has lost a true musical genius. Zakir Hussain’s contributions to music will forever be cherished,” before deleting the post.

A Legendary Career

Zakir Hussain, the son of iconic tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha, is celebrated as one of the greatest percussionists of all time. His groundbreaking 1973 collaboration with guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L. Shankar, and percussionist Vikku Vinayakram redefined global music by fusing Indian classical music with jazz.

Over his illustrious career, Hussain has garnered numerous accolades, including five Grammy Awards, with three wins at the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year.

As the misinformation surrounding his health continues to circulate, the focus remains on the artist’s recovery. Fans and well-wishers worldwide have united in prayers, hoping for his swift return to good health.
