Maa Box Office Collection Day 3: Kajol's Horror Debut Sees Modest Weekend Growth

Kajol’s latest release Maa, a mythological horror film, has shown steady growth at the box office over its opening weekend despite receiving mixed reviews. Marking her return to the big screen after three years, Kajol’s performance has been widely appreciated even as the film draws varied reactions from critics.

According to Sacnilk, Maa collected ₹4.65 crore on Day 1 and saw an upward trend over the weekend with ₹6 crore on Day 2 and ₹6.71 crore on Day 3. This brings the film’s total to ₹17.36 crore by the end of its first weekend. The film reported an overall Hindi occupancy rate of 30.99%, with better audience turnout in the afternoon and evening shows.

The film faced competition from Kannappa, a star-studded release featuring cameo appearances by Akshay Kumar, Mohanlal, and Prabhas. While Maa surpassed Kannappa on Day 3 with ₹6.71 crore against the latter’s ₹5.66 crore, the latter still holds a lead in total weekend earnings.

Directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, and Kumar Mangat Pathak, Maa also stars Indraneil Sengupta, Ronit Roy, and Kherin Sharma. The film follows the journey of Aambika and her daughter as they encounter a demonic curse after the mysterious death of her husband.

While audiences praised Kajol’s performance, the film’s second half and the lack of impactful scares drew criticism. Speaking about what drew her to the project, Kajol told Hindustan Times, "Maa came to me as a concept note, and I loved it because I am quite a mythology buff. Our country has such wonderful and fabulous stories and one of my favourites is Maa Kali and Raktabeej's story."

Maa marks Kajol’s first venture into the horror genre and brings a blend of mythology and supernatural elements to the big screen.
