Papon Reflects on Diwali Traditions Rooted in Family and Culture

Singer-composer Papon shares his heartfelt memories of Diwali, a festival celebrated with diyas, family gatherings, and unique clay fireworks. For Papon, the festival has always been deeply entrenched in tradition. "From childhood, I have celebrated with friends and family. Till date, I make it a point to meet everyone to celebrate the festival," he recalls.

Growing up in Guwahati, Assam, Papon describes how the festival transformed his home into a radiant display. "We had lots of diyas to light up the whole house and our entire compound," he explains. A cherished tradition with his father involved meticulously decorating their home. "Back in Assam, you decorate every corner of the entire compound you live in," he shares, emphasizing the dedication required for the process of lighting each individual diya.

Papon fondly remembers the late nights spent with his father, stating, "My father and I kept earthen lamps, which were placed on banana tree leaves. It's done very beautifully in Assam... I used to stay up with him till very late in the night."

Adding to the uniqueness of their celebrations, he mentions the local fireworks from Barpeta, which hold a special place in his heart. "They are very unique and are made of clay, etc," he notes.

When asked what Diwali signifies for him, Papon articulates a profound message: "I think spreading positivity and happiness however you can is the best message to take away from this festival." As he prepares to release new music, the spirit of Diwali remains a guiding influence in his life.
