Shahid Kapoor Reflects on Kabir Singh, Addresses Debate Around Toxic Masculinity

Shahid Kapoor's 2019 blockbuster Kabir Singh continues to spark debates years after its release. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film, which collected over ₹250 crore at the box office, received polarized reviews. While lauded by many for its raw storytelling and performances, it faced significant criticism for allegedly perpetuating toxic masculinity.

In a recent interview with journalist Faye D'Souza, Shahid Kapoor addressed the controversy surrounding his portrayal of Kabir Singh, an aggressive and deeply flawed lover. Reflecting on the character, Shahid explained the broader perspective behind such roles and their connection to real life.

Speaking on the debate, Shahid said, "It is not really about who I am. It is about who we all can be. Who we all choose to be. What we all want to be, and your learning has to be from that. You cannot make films that are never addressing what is happening in life.”

He further elaborated, “I don't think a lot of things that Kabir did was acceptable at all. I would not accept a guy like that. But do guys like that exist? Do girls like that fall in love with guys like that? Yes, they do! So why can't we make a movie about it? You walk away, you decide what you like, what you don't like. That's really up to you, as an audience.”

Kabir Singh, a remake of Vanga's Telugu film Arjun Reddy, starred Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani in lead roles. While the film's success was undeniable, it ignited a conversation about the portrayal of unhealthy relationships in cinema and their impact on audiences.

Shahid Kapoor, who was last seen in the romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya opposite Kriti Sanon, is now gearing up for his next project. His upcoming film Deva is set to hit theatres on January 31, promising another captivating performance from the actor.
