Filmmaker Laxman Utekar Removes Controversial "Lezim" Dance Scene from Upcoming Movie Chhaava

Filmmaker Laxman Utekar has announced the removal of the "lezim" dance scene from his upcoming film Chhaava, which is based on the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The decision comes in response to objections raised by politicians and history enthusiasts over the portrayal of the historical figure.

The announcement followed a meeting between Utekar and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Monday at the latter’s residence. The meeting was convened to address concerns about the accuracy and cultural sensitivity of the scene, which had sparked widespread criticism. The film’s trailer, released earlier this week, included a sequence featuring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna—playing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai, respectively—dancing with the "lezim," a traditional musical instrument with deep cultural significance in Maharashtra.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Utekar stated, "The meeting with Raj Thackeray was to seek his advice. His knowledge of history, especially regarding Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is extensive. He provided valuable suggestions for changes, which we will implement. As for the scene featuring Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj playing ‘lezim,’ we will delete it. It was not our intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments."

The controversial scene had drawn sharp criticism from social media users and politicians alike, who described the depiction as disrespectful to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Addressing these concerns, Utekar explained, "We are removing the scene because it is not a significant part of the film. If people feel that the portrayal is inaccurate, we are willing to make this change. Our goal has always been to honour and showcase the greatness of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj to the world. This film is a result of four years of research by our team. The aim is to educate the world about the contributions of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj as a great warrior and king. If any part of the film tarnishes this vision, we have no hesitation in addressing it."

The decision has been welcomed by Maharashtra Minister and Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant, who had previously called for the removal of the controversial sequence. Expressing his satisfaction with the director’s action, Samant stated that the resolution would help settle the issue and ensure the film remains a respectful tribute to the historical figure.

Chhaava is slated for release on February 14 and aims to bring the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy to a global audience.
